Key points

  • One rabies vaccination and a Pet Passport allows the pet to travel in
Europe 21 days after the vaccination
  • The Pet Passport is valid till the next rabies booster is due, usually three
years. The booster must be done before the expiry date to keep it valid.
  • If you are resident in the country you will have to comply with local laws
    which may demand yearly boosters
  • From January 2012 there will be no requirement for animals to have
been blood tested following vaccination - since there was a 6 month gap
between blood testing and return there is now no further need to blood
    test.
Prices

Microchip (essential)                                                                        £18
Rabies vaccination (over 3 months old)                                           £30

Pet Passport (done with first vaccination)                                         £20

24- 48 hours before returning to this country the pet will need to be given
tick and tapeworm treatment certified by  a veterinary surgeon.
From
January 2012 the tick treatment requirement  ends but there is still doubt
about the tapeworm treatment.
Many southern European countries have a wide range of diseases not
commonly found in this country, many of these are carried by ticks and
biting insects and the risk can be reduced by appropriate insecticides.
